When the course is particularly rough, the BMC racing team pulls for the Fourstroke FS01 XTR. This is a cross-country full-suspension 29er race rig that, owing to two BMC concepts, APS, and BWC, is still more than ready to take on any manner of trail riding you can imagine.
BWC, Big Wheel Concept, is the first point of thinking. This is BMC re-thinking geometry to maximize the benefits of 29ers while minimizing any negatives. The result is an agile climber that is as comfortable picking lines while crawling uphill as it is ripping up an open descent. The keys are lower bottom bracket, longer top tube, shorter head tube, and more relaxed head angle. APS, Advanced Pivot System, is how they isolate the pedaling inputs from the trail-created inputs. The suspension is active whether you're pedaling or coasting. And to tune it perfectly, you just sit on the bike and look down at the swingarm to find the Initial Load Indicator. Machined and painted lines on the arm that allow you to figure out where neutral is, and then tune for firm or soft.
This is a team bike, so it's set up for World Cup racing. So, yes, the frame is light, 2040g for a Medium, but it is also outfitted with a full complement of top-shelf racing components. The bulk of the build is Shimano XTR, with a 36/26 double ring crank in front, eleven-speed 11-40 cassette cogset in back, low-profile XTR Shadow Plus rear derailleur, XTR front, and XTR Rapidfire shifters bolted right next to the hydraulic XTR Race brake levers which run to XTR XC Race calipers.
